The campaign was developed by the NPSA in response to a known patient safety concern about low hand hygiene compliance among healthcare staff, contributing to increased levels of HCAI.

The strategic direction of the campaign is set by the NPSA in consultation with stakeholder groups. 

The cleanyourhands campaign maintains an active involvement with stakeholders across England and Wales who are encouraged to actively participate and inform the campaign’s design and implementation through feedback, events and surveys.

Additionally, we have established an overall expert reference group that brings together key national stakeholder representatives and provides clinical expertise and guidance to the campaign.

To provide specific support to the campaign’s implementation in Wales, a group has been established. The group meets twice a year and includes representatives from all Welsh trusts.

Day-to-day management of the campaign is carried out by a small team based at the NPSA offices in Maple Street, London.
